Why I am eager to make you understand

Jan 6, 2015 - As a scientist in pursuit of truth, my work is free of self-interest. I am professionally detached from the science. As a maker of religious claims, I must be viewed by prudent people as a grasping, competitive human being in pursuit of power. The science is true whether I am tall or short, honest or a liar.
Accept the science. Accept the science and discard me as a religious claimant if you deem this the course of prudence. Do not throw away vital, precious knowledge – knowledge with power to change the world – because you think that I am an unreliable man.
Simple mood generalization accounts for normative behavior. It sets the standard by which we measure and judge emotional relations. It establishes a key to understanding that is regarded as natural and obvious. Knowledge of the law of simple mood generalization and familiarity with the usual patterns of its operation are integrated into our human common sense.
When you smile and are friendly, you put people at their ease; you draw smiling and friendly responses. (Loving, smiling adults make babies smile.) The friendly impulse spreads simply from feelings to face, and from person to person. A smile evokes a smile; friendliness invites friendliness in return. But if you are angry and threatening, you make baby cry; you frighten people and make them angry.
We humans match responses to provocations by responding in kind. We give tit for tat. We tend to reflect (duplicate, or mirror) the feelings and behaviors that strike us from without. As people form emotional and behavioral mirror images of each other, they resemble one another. They look alike in behaving similarly, and in sharing common feelings. By mirror imaging, we are identified with one another. Tit for tat emotional relations ordinarily prevail. Not only does behavior match between relating personalities, so do feelings.
Underlying feelings are shared (held in common) much more than we know. Collectively shared fantasies influence individual thought much more than we realize. We are unaware of the extent to which we feel and act in common. Emotional coordination occurring unconsciously is much more powerful and extensive than we commonly suppose.
Group impulses driven by shared emotions and fantasies provoke coordinated behavior that draws individuals willy-nilly (unconsciously) into its net. The Group is a metaphysical personality system that carries on personal relations with every group member. Individuals face common attitudes toward them in the world as the Group Mind reacts meaningfully to the provocations that individual lives present.
Emotional relations between individuals and the groups that determine their fate are ruled by simple mood generalization. A man that loves country and family is generally loved by countrymen and family, but not always.
Feelings spread simply between one personality system and another. Feelings spread simply along stranger lines between representatives of different orders of reality. How happy we feel spreads simply to facial muscles to evoke smiles in a different (physical, not emotional) order of reality. Thus Mind mirrors body and Body mirrors mind in their endless, sharing and linked emotional relations.
Activity in one order of reality mirrors – by the operation of simple mood generalization – activity in a different order of reality. The two forms of activity that represent the spreading mood represent different orders of reality. They are very different forms of activity.
A smiling face mirrors friendly, loving feelings. Feelings belong to an emotional order of reality, which is a form of reality that is only subjectively real. The reality of emotions cannot be demonstrated, yet emotions are real. They are subjectively real. Facial nerves and facial muscles are objectively real. Their simple, undeniable reality can be demonstrated, and has been repeatedly.
Here, there and everywhere, two different orders of reality engage in mirroring relations ruled by the remarkable power of the rule of simple mood generalization to translate a simply spreading emotional impulse from one order of reality to another. The impulse is translated into entirely foreign terms as it spreads between separate orders of reality, which happens constantly in this universe in which we find ourselves.
The universal rules of psychology, in contrast to the universal rules of physics, admit of exceptions. There are exceptions to every psychology rule because there are no limits to the behavior of feelings. Feelings insist on and assert ultimate freedom from every rule (like the rule of simple mood generalization) telling feelings how they must always act. Nonetheless, the rules are valid. Valid psychological rules admit of regular and frequent exceptions.
Every mood expresses an attitude; an attitude toward something. Feelings are reactions to provocations, usually prior feelings. Feelings reflect activity in two places at once; the emotion is unintelligible without knowledge of the emotions and provocations to which it comes in response. There is no limit to the variety of two-place phenomena.
The law of simple mood generalization states that moods (feelings or emotions) tend to spread in unmodified form from their place of origin by inducing feelings encountered along their lines of spread to replicate their form. A simply spreading mood tends to stamp every encountered mood in its precise mold. A happy impulse tends to induce happiness along its line of spread as a sad feeling tends to induce sadness in whoever feels its influence.
All feelings exert influence at a distance because all feelings tend to spread in unaltered form from here to there, where here and there are everything that can be imagined. The most familiar emotional here and there that we know is the separate feelings and attitudes of separate people. Moods tend to spread like wildfire in groups according to the pattern generated by simple mood generalization. They become angry or sober or wild or frightened together as they act like the members of a crowd. The members of a crowd do not know one another; everyone is anonymous and the same. Where people are simply identified, simple mood spread is obvious.
Differences in prior emotional character between here and there that refuse to let themselves be erased by spreading emotional influence lead to a form of mood relations called complementary mood relations generated by complementary mood spread. Complementary mood generalization occurs as an easily understood variant of simple mood generalization.
Simple mood generalization is the ruling emotional principle of group life. The rule makes social life scientifically coherent. Simple mood generalization and the understandings that it generates make human relations (and all animal relations) meaningful according to describable rules.
Mobs behave like the largely unorganized minds of infants where simple mood generalization prevails. Civil societies with rules and diversity and customary order are like the integrated minds of mature adults. Where checks and balances operate, the communicating elements of the system are differentiated; they are not perfectly identified. Complementary mood generalization prevails. Group personality systems are metaphysical representatives of a family of a certain psychological type which includes animals, human beings, and the gods of human religion.
When the various manifestations of simple mood generalization are thoroughly examined, our irrational lives fall into understandable patterns. Human irrationality presents no serious intellectual problems once the principle of analysis is thoroughly grasped.
Why am I so eager to have you understand and accept my new science of psychology? I am held tightly in the grip of the relentless law of simple mood generalization. My ideas want to spread in unaltered form from their place of origin. Like all men, I want to be understood. The wish to be understood is the doing of simple mood generalization. Feelings love to travel, and they want to remain the same as the scenery changes.
